Microphone price cannot overcome loud competing sound or excessive distance. Record room tone and listen for clothing, handling, wireless, electrical, traffic, and reverberation problems before the important take.

Choose and quiet the location
Listen before looking. Refrigerators, ventilation, traffic cycles, music, fluorescent buzz, computer fans, reflective walls, and nearby conversations may be less obvious on set than in headphones. Pause controllable devices safely, close or open doors strategically, schedule around predictable noise, and move the interview when the environment cannot support intelligible speech.
Reverberation is not removed simply by lowering input gain because the microphone receives direct voice and room reflections together. Move the microphone closer and add safe absorptive materials outside the frame when practical. A highly directional microphone can reduce some off-axis sound, but indoors its placement and reflected sound still matter. Test the exact position.
Place the microphone for the voice
A boom microphone should remain close, aimed consistently, and outside the frame while following head turns. A lavalier should be positioned for clear speech and isolated from clothing rub, jewelry, hair, and chest resonance. Concealing a microphone adds friction risk. Use mounting methods suitable for the wardrobe and obtain consent before touching a participant.
Microphones differ in pattern, sensitivity, self-noise, frequency response, power, connector, and handling behavior. Match the tool to distance and environment rather than calling one type universally cinematic. Keep wind protection available outdoors and for moving air. Record a rehearsal while the subject gestures, turns, and speaks at realistic intensity.
Set, monitor, and protect levels
Ask for the loudest likely line or laugh, then leave headroom because clipped digital peaks cannot be reconstructed reliably. Numeric meter targets vary with recorder scale, format, production standard, processing, and delivery, so follow the equipment and project specification. Automatic gain may raise room noise during pauses or react audibly; evaluate it rather than assuming manual or automatic is always superior.
Wear closed headphones and monitor the signal after the relevant preamp, wireless link, and recorder when possible. Listen for overload, intermittent connectors, radio interference, latency, battery warnings, and one dead channel. Meter movement alone cannot reveal rustle or distortion. Check that the camera receives the intended reference or production feed and that channels are labeled correctly.
Record coverage for postproduction
Use a second independent recorder or microphone for important, unrepeatable dialogue when practical, but verify that the backup does not share the same failure. Slate or create a clear sync point and keep clocks organized. Record room tone under the same conditions, plus wild lines for words masked by noise. Note problems immediately so the editor does not discover them after access ends.
In postproduction, select the cleanest takes, smooth edits with appropriate room tone, reduce steady noise carefully, and use equalization or dynamics for intelligibility. Aggressive denoising can create watery artifacts and damaged consonants. Loudness and peak delivery requirements depend on destination and specification. Always inspect the final export, not only the timeline playback.
Record an interview in a working kitchen
A chef must speak between preparation tasks while refrigerators, ventilation, dishes, and clothing movement create competing sound.
- Map which appliances can be paused safely, schedule answers between loud tasks, and choose the least reflective workable position.
- Test a boom close above the speaker and a carefully mounted lavalier while the chef turns and reaches normally.
- Set headroom from realistic speech, monitor both paths through a rehearsal, and note any appliance restart deadline.
- Capture room tone, key wild lines, process sounds, and a second recording path before restoring every paused appliance.
