A simple talking-head setup needs a controllable room, a comfortable subject position, one motivated main source, managed shadow contrast, a separated background, and consistent color and exposure. More fixtures are not automatically better. Window light, practical lamps, reflectors, flags, and purpose-built lights can all work when their direction, size, flicker, heat, power, and color are tested on the actual camera.

Choose the room and frame
Select a quiet room with enough depth to separate subject from background and enough control over windows and overhead fixtures. Identify daylight changes during the recording window. Turn off mixed lights when they create unwanted color, but preserve practical lamps that belong in the scene if they can be balanced safely and do not flicker.
Set the camera and subject before placing the key light. Check eye line, headroom, background lines, reflective surfaces, monitors, private information, and room for microphone placement. Moving the subject away from the wall can create separation and reduce wall shadows, but the useful distance depends on space, lens, framing, and sound.
Shape the main light
Use a window or fixture as the main source and move it around the subject while watching the face. A larger apparent source generally creates broader shadow transitions; closeness and diffusion affect both softness and intensity. Side placement can reveal form, while near-camera placement can reduce shadow. Choose the shape that fits the speaker and message rather than copying a fixed angle.
Raise or lower the source to make eye sockets, nose shadow, and chin shadow believable and comfortable. Watch catchlights and glasses. Reflections obey geometry, so changing source height, side, subject angle, camera position, or glasses can move glare. Do not ask the subject to tolerate unsafe brightness, heat, unstable stands, or strained posture.
Control contrast and background
If the shadow side is too dark for the intent, return light with a reflector or low-output fill. If room reflections make the face too flat, place a dark flag safely to subtract fill. Judge the result on the recorded image because camera tone settings affect perceived contrast. Fill direction should not create conflicting shadows or unnatural upward light.
Treat the background as part of the exposure. Remove bright distractions, adjust practical lamps, or add a controlled background or edge light only when separation needs it. Colored accent light can contaminate skin and neutral objects. Avoid placing a bright saturated patch directly behind the head unless that visual weight is deliberate.
Test technical consistency and safety
Set exposure using skin and important highlights, not a universal skin value. Choose white balance from known references and creative context, then lock it when consistency matters. Test every fixture at the planned output and video settings for flicker or color change. Dimming method and battery state can alter some lights, so a brand label alone is not proof.
Secure stands with appropriate weight, route cables away from walkways, respect circuit capacity, provide ventilation, and keep hot equipment from people and materials. Record a full rehearsal with speech and gestures. Review focus, motion, skin, eyeglass glare, background, sound, and light drift, then save positions and settings for pickups without claiming they transfer to another room.
Light an office lesson with one fixture

- Block or avoid the changing window, turn off the mixed overheads, and reposition the camera so the framed print no longer reflects the main source.
- Place one diffused fixture to shape the face, then move it while checking glasses, eye sockets, and microphone clearance.
- Compare no fill, neutral reflection, and negative fill, selecting the simplest version that gives the intended facial contrast.
- Lock color and exposure, record a speaking rehearsal, inspect for flicker and drift, and mark safe stand and chair positions for later takes.

Common mistakes
- Adding several lights before controlling the window, overhead fixtures, reflective background, and subject position.
- Copying a fixed key-light angle without checking the speaker's face, glasses, comfort, and intended tone.
- Assuming an LED fixture is flicker-free at every dimming level, shutter setting, frame rate, and power state.
Try one
A talking-head frame has good facial exposure but bright glasses, a green shadow side, and pulsing background light. Propose an order of correction.
First test and remove or replace the pulsing fixture, then control the green reflected or mixed light. Move source, subject, glasses, or camera geometry to clear reflections while preserving facial shape. Recheck exposure and color only after those physical causes are addressed.
