Short answer

A middlegame plan links a position feature to a sequence of achievable improvements while remaining responsive to the opponent's forcing moves and counterplay. Planning concepts are practical principles. FIDE governs legal moves and game completion; engine evaluation conventions can test positions but do not make strategic plans into formal rules or universal recipes.

Define the problem precisely

Begin with tactics because a strategic plan cannot justify ignoring check, hanging material, or forced mate. Once immediate forcing lines are addressed, inventory king safety, material, pawn structure, open lines, weak squares, space, active and restricted pieces, and plausible pawn breaks for both sides.

A useful feature must connect to a move. Calling a pawn weak matters only if it can be attacked, defended, exchanged, or used to distract. Calling a file open matters only if a piece can occupy it without tactical failure. Write the obstacle that prevents the desired improvement.

Use a repeatable process

Identify the position's most urgent imbalance, create two candidate plans, and find the smallest legal move that advances each one. Then calculate the opponent's strongest forcing response and likely counterplan. Choose a move, not an abstract aspiration, and reassess after every reply.

Plans can include improving a poorly placed piece, preparing a pawn break, contesting an open line, exchanging a key defender, or restricting counterplay. Prefer plans supported by several pieces and clear prerequisites. If the opponent creates a direct threat, revise rather than defending the old plan's prestige.

Know what the result means

Static features do not have fixed numerical values across positions. A backward pawn can be weak in one position and support useful control in another. An engine's evaluation summarizes its searched position under implementation conventions; it does not explain a human plan unless the variation and ideas are examined.

A rule decides whether a move is legal. A strategic principle suggests what may matter. A concrete variation tests whether a plan works now. Optional methods such as writing imbalances or using a candidate-plan table are training structures, not requirements for over-the-board thought.

Review and transfer the skill

Compare the plan you stated with the moves you played. If they diverged, decide whether tactics correctly forced a change, the plan lacked a prerequisite, or execution drifted. Consult an engine only after this account, and inspect variations around the first disputed decision.

The planning cycle applies whenever no forcing sequence settles the position: observe, prioritize, propose, test, act, and reassess. It prevents both aimless improving moves and rigid adherence to a plan after the board has changed.

Worked example: middlegame planning

In a hypothetical middlegame, White has more space on the queenside, a rook that could use the c-file, and a backward pawn that Black may attack. No exact engine score or best move is claimed because the complete position is not specified.

  1. Check all forcing moves for both sides and confirm that no immediate tactic overrides strategic planning.
  2. State plan A as contesting the c-file and plan B as preparing a pawn break, including the prerequisite for each.
  3. Choose one legal candidate move per plan and calculate Black's most forcing reply and likely pressure on the backward pawn.
  4. Select the candidate with a coherent response to counterplay, then schedule a fresh assessment after Black moves.
Result: The process converts broad features into testable candidates without inventing a universal strategy. A complete board would be required to determine which candidate is strongest.

  • Choosing a long strategic plan before checking whether either side has a forcing tactical sequence.

  • Treating an engine evaluation number as a plan or as a guaranteed prediction of the game result.

You want to occupy an open file, but your opponent can win the rook immediately after it enters. Is file control still the plan?

The general idea may remain relevant, but that execution fails concrete calculation. Address the tactical reason the rook is vulnerable, prepare the entry differently, choose another plan, or abandon the idea if no legal sequence makes it workable.
