Define the problem precisely

Kings may move one adjoining square but may not move onto an attacked square, so the kings can never legally stand adjacent. A pawn moves and captures according to its direction and may promote on reaching the last rank. Under FIDE law, the pawn's exchange for a queen, rook, bishop, or knight of the same color is immediate, and the new piece takes effect at once.

Count tempi by writing moves for both sides, not by assuming the first pawn to advance promotes. Mark legal king routes, pawn-controlled squares, captures, checks after promotion, and possible stalemate. The simple square rule applies only to an unobstructed race and must be recalculated when a king, check, or capture changes the route.

Use a repeatable process

Exact endgame habits strengthen calculation elsewhere: update attacked squares after every move, preserve move order, and distinguish a forced result from a promising plan. No fixed study timeline or rating improvement follows from mastering a selected set of positions.

Worked example: king and pawn endgames

Consider a hypothetical legal position with White king e5, White pawn e6, Black king e7, and White to move, with no other pieces. The exercise checks legal movement and promotion ideas rather than asserting the result without calculation.

  1. Mark squares attacked by each king and the e-pawn, remembering that neither king may move adjacent to the other.
  2. List White's legal king moves and the pawn advance, then calculate Black's legal replies to each candidate.
  3. Continue each line until the pawn promotes, is captured, or reaches a repeated or terminal position that can be classified.
  4. Check whether any final no-move position is checkmate or stalemate by testing check status separately.
Result: The written tree establishes what follows from this exact side-to-move position. Changing a king square or the side to move requires a new calculation rather than importing the result.
