Self-analysis compares what you perceived, calculated, and chose during a game with the position's actual legal demands and stronger alternatives found afterward. FIDE notation and rules help reconstruct the game. Engine search and evaluation are analytical tools with settings and conventions; an annotation routine is optional training, not a formal requirement or guaranteed improvement plan.

Optional labels such as inaccuracy or mistake need explicit thresholds and should not be treated as universal categories.

Review and transfer the skill

Revisit the corrected position after a delay without the saved answer, then compare your new reasoning with the original. Track whether the replacement question appeared in later games. Do not invent a percentage target or promise that a review cadence produces a rating change.

The same evidence-first review works for openings, tactics, middlegames, and endgames. By locating the first faulty assumption rather than only the final loss, analysis produces a small lesson that can influence the next decision.

Worked example: self-analysis of chess games

A hypothetical player lost after move 32 and initially blames the final rook loss. Their notes show uncertainty on move 21, when they ignored an opponent's pawn break to continue a queenside plan.

  1. Reconstruct move 21 exactly and write the plan, candidates, and expected opponent reply from memory.
  2. Calculate the pawn break and other forcing replies without an engine, marking the first branch previously omitted.
  3. Consult engine analysis with visible settings, compare multiple legal candidates, and inspect why its line differs.
  4. Write one correction: before continuing a plan, check whether the opponent has a forcing break that changes the structure.
Result: The review identifies an earlier decision process that contributed to the later loss. It does not claim that one corrected move would guarantee a win or a particular rating gain.
