Time blocking assigns specific tasks to specific calendar windows. It helps reduce decision fatigue and last-minute rushes, but it should remain flexible. Use priority tiers and buffer blocks so one disruption does not break the entire week.

Turn workload into blockable tasks

Break assignments into units like read 12 pages and summarize, solve 15 problems, or draft one section. Smaller tasks are easier to place and track than broad labels like study chemistry.

Use a planning pass at the start of the week and a short nightly check-in to rebalance unfinished tasks.

Plan for variance, not perfection

A stable plan includes fixed commitments, focused blocks, and catch-up blocks. If every hour is packed, delays cascade quickly.

Keep at least one low-stakes block for overflow. This avoids pulling time from sleep or urgent tasks when a day slips.

  • Cap deep-focus blocks to a length you can sustain.

Map four courses into a weekly calendar

  2. Place hardest tasks in morning blocks on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
  3. Reserve two 45-minute buffer blocks on Wednesday and Sunday.
  4. At week end, compare estimated versus actual time and adjust next week by task type.
