Start with the evidence

A diagram, classification, forecast, or simulation is not a direct observation of every process it represents.

Record date, time, general location, weather, habitat, effort, sensory evidence, behavior, count method, and what could not be observed. Keep records separate from interpretation. Check units, labels, selection, context, and whether evidence is direct, inferred, simulated, or summarized.

Use models without mistaking them for reality

Field guides, maps, and ecological explanations help interpret a record, but a plausible identification or relationship remains an inference until evidence distinguishes alternatives. Models leave out detail, so evaluate whether their assumptions fit the question rather than calling a model simply true or false.

Choose a lawful accessible route or fixed point, use the same broad observation protocol when comparing visits, sketch or describe before identifying, and retain uncertain records. Change one factor at a time when that is practical, record departures from the plan, and compare like with like. A single result can be useful evidence without becoming a universal rule or a claimed study finding.

Observe without collecting or touching unknown organisms, plants, fungi, nests, remains, water, or soil; keep distance from wildlife and leave for weather, fire, flood, tide, traffic, poor visibility, unstable ground, closures, or personal-safety concerns.   1. Define the observation area, start and end rule, viewing position, weather notes, and what will count as a separate detection before the visit.
  2. Record direct descriptions and behavior in sequence without approaching, feeding, handling, collecting, or changing the habitat.
  3. Add tentative identifications afterward with the field evidence, guide used, alternatives considered, and confidence language.
  4. Compare visits only after checking differences in effort, weather, visibility, season, noise, route, and observer behavior.
