Check, document, and deliver

Compression cannot reconstruct a clipped recording, make poor microphone technique consistent without side effects, or guarantee loudness compliance. A lead vocal has a few forceful words that jump forward, but the verses depend on quiet phrasing and natural breaths.

  1. Use clip gain to reduce one exceptional shout, then identify the remaining phrase-level variation that the compressor should manage.
  2. Apply conservative compression, adjust timing so consonants and phrase shape remain intact, and set output for a fair bypass comparison.
  3. Listen through quiet verses and loud choruses while watching reduction, checking breath lift, room tone, pumping, and output peaks.
  4. Use automation for the final placement rather than increasing compression until every word reaches the same apparent intensity.
