Prepare a controlled session

Make and judge the change

Check missing files, inactive plug-ins, sample-rate warnings, muted or hidden tracks, routing loops, sidechain dependencies, automation, tempo changes, count-in, tails, and alignment. Open the package from a new location or import the audio into a blank session to verify that folder paths and assumptions are not hiding errors.

When compatibility is uncertain, provide both editable material and clearly named audio references. Print a wet effect and a dry option when revision needs justify both, and state which one represents the approved sound. Avoid creating many undocumented alternatives that transfer uncertainty to the recipient.

Check, document, and deliver

Use a versioned top folder with session, audio, MIDI, references, notes, and exports. Include a track list, start point, tempo information, plug-in or hardware dependencies, processing status, known issues, and requested action. Verify file counts or checksums after transfer and retain the sent package unchanged.

Collection does not grant permission to redistribute licensed samples or plug-ins, and freezing or printing may omit a dependency if routing is misunderstood. Different application versions can change playback. A stem cannot be perfectly separated back into its component tracks after shared processing is printed.

Worked example: organize a collaborative session

A producer must send a song with virtual drums, audio vocals, tempo changes, and several return effects to a mixer using another workstation.

  1. Confirm the mixer's requested format and shared start point, duplicate the approved session, and write down tempo changes, sample rate, and current song version.
  2. Name and group tracks, preserve vocal playlists, trace returns and sidechains, collect all audio, and print virtual drums while retaining MIDI and a kit note.
  3. Export dry or wet options only where agreed, plus a reference mix, then import every audio file into a blank timeline to verify alignment and tails.
  4. Package notes, files, and checksums in a versioned folder, transfer it, confirm receipt, and retain the exact sent package.
Result: The mixer can reconstruct the intended arrangement and identify editable choices without owning the producer's complete plug-in setup.
