Creating a Topical Authority Map

Map the questions, tasks, evidence, and relationships a credible resource needs without treating topical authority as a ranking formula.

A topical map is an editorial model of what a specific audience must understand and do, organized around entities, tasks, decisions, and evidence. It helps teams find gaps, duplication, and useful internal links. 'Topical authority' is not a Google metric or guaranteed ranking factor, so the map should improve completeness and navigation for people rather than chase a fixed number of pages.

Define the subject boundary

Begin with the product, audience, and decisions the resource is qualified to support. 'Home solar' is too broad for a local installer; 'evaluating rooftop solar for older homes in our service area' creates a defensible boundary. List adjacent subjects that matter to the reader but belong with utilities, regulators, tax professionals, or structural engineers rather than your editorial team.

Write the core entities and relationships inside that boundary. For solar, entities might include roof, panel, inverter, utility rate, interconnection, production estimate, installer, and warranty. Relationships reveal useful questions: how shading changes production estimates or how inverter choices affect maintenance. This produces a knowledge model grounded in the task instead of a bag of keyword modifiers.

Map tasks and question layers

Organize audience needs across understanding, evaluation, execution, and maintenance. A person may first need basic terminology, then cost assumptions, quote comparison, installation preparation, and performance troubleshooting. Add questions from customer research and Search Console to the relevant stage. Preserve the language people use while naming each underlying question consistently.

Give every node a proposed content type and completion test. A definition should state scope and examples. A comparison should expose criteria and tradeoffs. A procedure should include prerequisites, sequence, checks, and failure handling. Mark questions already answered by an authoritative external source when your site has no useful original contribution.

Design pages and relationships

Decide which nodes belong on one page by comparing reader, intent, evidence, and next action. Avoid a rigid rule that every node becomes a URL. A main guide can explain a process while supporting pages handle a calculator, detailed troubleshooting path, or regulated issue. Each page should stand on its own and link to the next relevant question in context.

Internal links should describe the destination and help a reader continue, not exist merely to make a graph dense. Use ordinary crawlable links and maintain a clear information hierarchy. A hub may be useful for navigation, but creating a hub does not establish expertise. The quality comes from accurate pages, firsthand evidence, clear ownership, and helpful connections.

Audit coverage and upkeep

Classify existing pages as keep, improve, merge, redirect, retire, or create. Look for duplicate intent, orphaned pages, unsupported claims, stale screenshots, and subjects outside the chosen boundary. Prioritize gaps that block an important customer task or leave a high-consequence question unanswered. Do not fill every empty cell simply because the map contains it.

Assign evidence owners and review intervals. Track whether mapped pages receive relevant queries, whether readers move to appropriate next steps, and whether support or sales still sees unanswered questions. Search performance can indicate discovery problems, but it cannot validate factual quality by itself. Review the map when products, regulations, audience needs, or terminology change.

Map a bookkeeping topic for freelancers

An accounting software company has forty disconnected posts about freelance bookkeeping and wants a coherent resource.

  1. Set the boundary around recordkeeping workflows for United States freelancers while assigning tax advice to qualified sources.
  2. Map entities such as income, expense, receipt, invoice, account, reconciliation, and report, then connect them to recurring tasks.
  3. Group questions by setup, weekly capture, monthly close, error correction, and accountant handoff.
  4. Audit current posts, merge three overlapping receipt articles, and identify missing reconciliation and handoff guides.
  5. Add contextual links and owners, then measure relevant query coverage and completion of the monthly-close worksheet.
Result: The site gains a maintainable learning path without publishing a page for every keyword permutation.
